John's Island Information

John's Island is many worlds merged together. It is a spectacularly natural environment and home to the Angel Oak, estimated to be a 1,500 year-old tree. The sea island also boasts a long history from Indians' shell-ring formations to highlighted drama in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Traditionally a farm and fishing bedroom community of Charleston, John's Island has stayed closesly bound to these roots.

Culture

The semi-tropical climate just slows things down, ya'll. The long, lazy growing seasons of the Carolinas are extended beyond those north of the Mason-Dixon line. This contributes to a culture forced to a slower pace by a long season and summer afternoons accompanied by a heavy heat. Farm work has to quit in South Carolina by mid-day. Long sips of sweet tea go hand-in-hand with a hiatus and have become tradition in the Lowcountry. So, come visit John's Island. Once you've crossed the bridge, the patience of planters will wash over you as you explore a true southern sea island community. John's Island is also touched deeply by the Gullah culture. The foods, language and art of the sea islands brings Geechee culture into the everyday lives of visitors and South Carolinians alike.
