John's Island Farmer's Markets
John's Island is all about its farms and fresh food markets. With lots of options on the island, a visitor could literally spend all day just exploring the many South Carolina Certified markets available in this special sea island community.
The Certified South Carolina program is a new cooperative effort between food producers, wholesalers, processors, retailers and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA). The cooperative also helps identify, brand and promote South Carolina products. Watch out for the Certified South Carolina logo in locations on John's Island, or visit the Certified SC site at http://www.certifiedscgrown.com/ for more information.
CSA's and U-Pick
John's Island's fertile lands supply the Charleston region with fresh produce and other goods year-round, depending upon the season. Several farms offer CSA programs, including fresh food delivery. A CSA is a community supported agricultural program. You will need to direct questions to each farm. Every program is independent.
Other farms open their fields to the public at harvest time. U-pick means just that - You Pick! It's a great option for families and a fun experience for kids. Strawberry, Blueberry and Tomato picking can keep little hands busy while helping them understand where their food comes from!
